Montauk is an intimate seaside hamlet set at the tip of Long Island’s South Fork. Sometimes referred to as “The End”, others would prefer to call it “The Beginning”. Within the estate area are famed Main Beach and Georgica, favorites for many looking to catch a sliver of sun and relaxation. Bridgehampton, a richly diverse town comprised up of farm fields, vineyards, horse farms, community and commerce, all leading easily to its pristine ocean beaches. Thought by many to be named because it bridged Southampton to East Hampton, Bridgehampton was actually named after the bridge over Sagg Pond, which was commissioned in 1686.

One cannot forget the historic significance associated with Bridgehampton either, with the Bridgehampton Historical Society, founded in 1956, sitting right in the middle of town.

The name Sagaponack, like so many others in the Hamptons, is derived from the Shinnecock Indian Nation and meant “land of the big ground nuts” or potatoes. Potato farming continued until the late 20th century but today those fields are home to huge estate. It is these estates that have ranked Sagaponack as the number one most expensive zip code.

Sagponack offers sublime natural beauty in its abundance of ponds along with miles white sandy ocean beaches. Open land prevails as well with farm field vistas, horse farms a plenty, and Wolfer Vineyard.

Originally just a stretch of open fields connecting Southampton to East Hampton, Sagaponack is now considered one of the smallest, yet wealthiest communities in the US. The maritime history is rooted at the foot of Main St., with the harbor and Long Wharf, which is now home to major yachts and sail boats, just as it was home to whaling vessels decades ago.

This rustic yet sophisticated hamlet offers a variety of old town charm with its local stops combined with fine dining restaurants, historical museums, and cultural events.

Westhampton is the ultimate seaside community. Amidst its many charms is its beachfront location along miles of ocean and picturesque shores.

From Rogers Beach to the village green, this hamlet is a fabulous retreat with exclusive boutiques, a thriving business community and a keen focus on the creative arts. Antique shows, arts and crafts exhibitions, and live music enhance the inviting atmosphere of Westhampton. The Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center is a local venue hosting world renowned artists of various genres year round.

The Westhampton Country Club offers golfing and social events, and numerous beach clubs line the Atlantic Ocean including The Swordfish Club, La Ronde, Quantuck Beach Club and Bath and Tennis Club. Cupsogue Beach, Pikes Beach, Quantuck Beach and Lashley Beach provide various amenities along the beautiful surf and sand.

Southold’s official flag proclaims it the oldest English town in New York State. Settled in 1640 by a group of thirteen families puritans from New Haven, Connecticut, it is the largest hamlet in the North Fork and stretches from Peconic Bay to Long Island Sound forming the center of the North Fork. In 1650, the population of Southold was about 180, growing to 880 by 1698.

Because almost every commodity had to come in or out of the area by boat, shipping developed into a large industry by the 1670s. Shipping remained an important industry until the railroad arrived nearly two centuries later. Today, the Horton Point Lighthouse, commissioned by George Washington in 1970, and built in 1857 is still an active aid to navigation.

Long used for potato farming, in the late 20th century, large areas of the North Fork were redeveloped as vineyards. This area of Long Island has developed a respectable wine industry.

Settled in 1682, Greenport is the North Fork’s quintessential Whaling Captain’s village with a distinct New England flair. Over the course of its history, Greenport had many names including Winter Harbor. Stirling, and Green Hill. In 1831 Greenport was officially adopted.

Historically famous for its significant whaling and fishing port, Greenport became a huge oyster center during the first half of the 20th century. Now it has become a tourism hub and a three-way link connecting Long Island to Shelter Island to the Hamptons, and Orient to Connecticut – all by ferry.

A very active antique and art community and lots of restaurants have made shopping and dining choices are abundant. A visit to Claudio’s, allegedly the Northeast’s oldest continuously same-family-run dockside fish restaurant, is a must. Just as the famous 1920s “Carrousel and Mitchell Park” located on Main Street and Front overlooking Greenport Harbor are a family favorite.

Shelter Island was given its name from Manhanset Indians for being “sheltered” between the North Fork and South Fork. Nestled between the two forks, Shelter Island offers a low-key atmosphere and a gentle pace of life, bringing you back to a time many thought gone forever.

At least one third of the island, Mashomack Preserve, is occupied by the Nature Conservancy – preserving the land and maintaining trails to enjoy Nature’s incredible island beauty. Accessible only by boat, with some of the most exquisite waterfront real estate and speed limits of 35 miles, Shelter Island is a peaceful home.

Well known for boaters are Coecles Harbor, Smith Cove and West Neck Harbor. The ferries control traffic, and ensure that, even in the busiest of tourism seasons, the island continues to provide the privacy its residents appreciate so much.

The Village of Southampton, settled in 1640 and incorporated in 1894, historically began with a small group of English Puritans. It is the second oldest English settlement in the state of New York and is named after the British Earl of Southampton. The Village of Quogue, founded in 1659 came into its own as a summer resort community in the 1890s a period known in the Village as the boarding house era. Following lengthy debate, the Village was incorporated in 1928 thereby giving it the autonomy it needed to develop over the years at its own measured pace. Today, Quogue proudly stands apart from the “Hamptons Scene” focusing as it always has, on wholesome family oriented activities.
